So how do the various apps I've tried meet my needs?Įmacs (The Mother Of All Editors). Things like word counts I can use WordService for, and I always have a terminal open, so I don't mind compiling the TeX myself, so they aren't essential. A small number of applications make this quite easy, such as iTexMac and SubEthaEdit, which both provide drop-down menus which will take me to any section, subsection, etc.ĥ) I want it to support the auto-completion of BibTeX references that BibDesk provides (see my post here for details). I don't want to have a dozen different dictionaries in a dozen different applications - I want to add my words to the system dictionary, and get on with my writing.Ĥ) I want it to allow me to easily navigate within my very long documents.

Smart indenting would be good, but is not essential.ģ) I want it to use the built-in OS X spell checking as I type. This is non-negotiable - yes, I'm just weird like that.Ģ) I want good, fast, syntax highlighting. And I want it to to do it automatically, without having to remember a special key combination. When I'm writing LaTeX, I really want the editor to be able to do a small number of things well:ġ) I want it to be able to hard-wrap my lines at a certain point (76 characters, for me), and keep them wrapped, even if I add stuff within the already wrapped lines. One thing I'm not happy with, however, is text editors for LaTeX under OS X. It shits all over that abomination that is EndNote on OS X (at least for LaTeX users).
#Autocomplete texshop free#
It's free (and Free), and, despite a few minor annoyances (ie., the autocomplete in the internal text fields almost always annoys, rather than helps, me), is the best bibliography manager I have tried. But also partly by my procrastinating about writing my thesis.īibDesk is a great tool for LaTeX bibliographies, and is getting better. This thread was largely inspired by the iWork thread, which mentions LaTeX occasioanlly. This is a task that I'm sure at least a few OS X users need to do fairly regularly. So, we've had more TextEditor threads here than you can shake the proverbial stick at - but this one is specific to writing LaTeX.
